Springer Spaniel is a good breed to consider bringing into the home if you are looking for a dog that is easy to take care of, that has a good temperament, and that has a reputation for enjoying the company of people. Being highly enthusiastic, eager to please, loyal, affectionate, and people-oriented makes the Springer an ideal companion for both city and country life. They are energetic and playful animals, and many owners find humor in their play. Springers are excellent all around dogs. Good training can bring excellent results in many fields, including agility, tracking, retrieving, obedience, hunting, and field trials. They are the perfect choice for families because they are so wonderful with children. Of course as with any dog breed, children should always be supervised to make sure they are not antagonizing the dog.
Springers are quite friendly, and eager to please their owners. There are people who use the sweet temperament of a Golden Retriever to describe the Springer’s personality. If it is what their families are doing, they are perfectly content with just laying around the house. Human contact helps them to adjust and adapt to different levels of activity. As a breeder we have raised many puppies and we can personally definitely testify to their high levels of affection!
Normally weighing between 35-55 pounds at adulthood this is the English Springer Spaniel breed which is medium in size. Springers can remain in good health most of their lives which can span 10 to 14 years. Springers which are field bred have shorter hair and are generally more active than the show type Springers. Both field bred and show bred Springer Spaniels have docked tails. The difference is, the field bred dogs tail is docked longer. The reason for this is that the tail is an important hunting tool It acts as an alert signal for the hunter.
A purebred English Springer Spaniel has a coat color of either liver and white or black and white. There does exist a tri-color combination in the breed where the coat is black, liver, and white, but it is much more rare and generally requires both the sire and dam to be tri-color also. A white mark down the middle distinguishes them.
Bred to be natural hunter, English Springer Spaniels, have alot of energy so you can expect them to enjoy running aroung, sniffing out “game” and retrieving things for you. Springers are happy to spend all day outside with their masters, they love water and are not particularly sensitive to weather in general. Springers have been popular as pets and working dogs for a very long time. This is because they are an extremely old and well-established breed. These canines are often regarded as one of the oldest and best established gun dog and hunting breeds.
So I hope you can see why we think Springers are a wonderful fit for many different situations, lifestyles, and families. We have seen how easily these adoring animals are accepted as a part of any family.
